External Solemnity of the Epiphany - Sunday 5th January 2020

Holy Mass - External Solemnity of the Epiphany

The External Solemnity of the Epiphany will be celebrated in the Extraordinary Form at 4 pm on Sunday 5th January 2020.

At the end of Holy Mass,  the traditional prayers and the blessing of the Epiphany Chalk will take place,

May we also take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy New Year and thank you for your support of the Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form within the Diocese over the last year.

On the feast of the Epiphany,  it is traditional for chalk to be blessed so that the faithful may mark the names of the magi over their doors as a witness to their faith and protection against evil.

Prayer:
P: Our help is in the name of The Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.

Bless, + O Lord God, this creature chalk to render it helpful to men. Grant that they who use it in faith and with it inscribe upon the entrance of their homes the names of thy saints, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, may through their merits and intercession enjoy health of body and protection of soul. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
The chalk is sprinkled with holy water.
Prayer Source: Roman Ritual: Volume III, The Blessings by Philip T. Weller, The Bruce Publishing Company, 1952

Holy Mass on 13th October - 18th Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday 13th October 2019

Sunday 13th October is also the 102nd anniversary of the miracle of the Sun at Fatima. Many gathered on that date in Fatima in response t the prophecy of the three shepherd children that the Virgin Mary would appear on that date and perform miracles.  Many who attended reported extraordinary solar activity such as the Sun appearing to dance in the sky.  These events reportedly lasted about 10 minutes. Bishop Jose de Silva declared the miracle worthy of belief in 1930 permitting officially the cult of Our Lady of Fatima.

In the spirit of Fatima and to pray for those who are close to death and for those who have died,  let us fervently pray the following prayer.  And we pray for the repose of the soul of Corey on this particular day,

"O My Jesus, forgive us our sins,  save us from the fires of hell,  lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of your mercy"

8th Sunday After Pentecost - Sunday 4th August

Give an account of thy stewardship

Holy Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 4th August at Sacred Heart Morriston at 4 p.m.  There will be tea and coffee available after Mass and the opportunity for confession.

The Mass will be of the 8th Sunday after Pentecost and the propers can be found here

An interesting discussion about the parable in this Mass can be found here

Now why would Jesus be telling a parable like this unless he wanted to draw out something serious from something totally ridiculous? And the Jewish rabbis, from time to time, did in fact use humor whenever they wanted to make a very serious point. That perhaps is what Jesus is doing in the gospel. He isn’t in any way suggesting that one should emulate the corrupt servant, or the unscrupulous debtors, or the equally crazy landowner. But he is reminding us—gently, and with much humor—that there is something we can learn from all of them.

They were, after all, typical men of the world, who have given all their energy to achieving money and the good life. They were what Jesus calls the “children of this world”. And we are told that if we, his followers, would only show the same dedication and resolve in pursuing goodness, we could achieve so much more! And neither is he telling us that wealth is bad or that we should neglect our worldly affairs. He is, however, telling us to regard things in the proper perspective; and that while some of us find ourselves having to actively pursue the treasures of this world, we should just as eagerly pursue the treasures of heaven.

Behind the humor of our gospel today then, are lessons Jesus would want us to seriously think about: [i] If only we were as eager and ingenious in our attempts to attain goodness as the rascals in the gospel are in attaining money and comfort, we would all be better persons. [ii] If only we would give as much attention to things which concern our souls as we do the things which concern our business, we would be much better men and women. [iii] And If only we would desire God as eagerly as we sometimes desire material wealth, we wouldn’t only be wealthy, we would be truly wealthy. For we will possess wealth that “no moth can destroy, no rust can corrode, and no thief can ever steal”.

Perpetual Adoration at Sacred Heart Church, Morriston

Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Many thanks to all who attended Holy Mass on Saturday which was offered for the repose of the soul of Corey.  After Holy Mass,  Father showed us the new monstrance and throne which will be used in the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

As many of you will know,  the monstrance was purchased jointly in memory of Corey and the late Richard Collins,  who first taught Corey to serve at the Traditional Mass

Parishioners of the parish kindly purchased the beautiful throne which has come all the way from Portugal,  and in the future,  the monstrance with throne will be given a dedicated home.

Finally,  this post would be incomplete without extending a huge thank you to Canon Jason Jones for organising the purchases and institution of the perpetual adoration, and for his continued support in offering the Traditional Mass and in his support for us in our loss of Corey and Richard.

Second Sunday After Easter - 5th May at 4 p.m.

Holy Mass will take place at Sacred Heart, Morriston, Swansea at 4 p.m. this coming Sunday, 5th May with the propers being those of the 2nd Sunday After Easter.

The sacrament of confession is available before and during Holy Mass and there will be refreshments sailable in the Sacred Heart Centre after Mass.

All are welcome.

Thanks are due to Canon Jason Jones for celebrating Holy Mass in the Extraordinary form in our diocese.  For those who are able to attend,  Holy Mass is also offered in the Extraordinary Form at St. Therese in Sandfields, Port Talbot on the 2nd Sunday of every month,  at 6 p.m.  Please contact the parish for further details.

This Sunday is called "Good Shepherd Sunday"

The propers for this Mass can be found by clicking here

Today is "Good Shepherd" Sunday in the usus antiquior, the 2nd Sunday after Easter, when the gospel is taken from that of St. John, chapter 10, verses 11-16:

"I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd gives His life for His sheep. But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, who own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees: and the wolf catches and scatters the sheep: and the hireling flees, because he is a hireling, and he has no care for the sheep. I am the good Shepherd: and I know Mine, and Mine know Me. As the Father knows Me, and I know the Father: and I lay down My life for My sheep. And other sheep I have that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd."

Today too in the usus antiquior the Communion antiphon also invokes this imagery: "I am the good Shepherd, alleluia: and I know My sheep, and Mine know Me, alleluia, alleluia."

In the modern Roman liturgy, these references take place on the Fourth Sunday after Easter (one week hence), where the gospel there is taken either from St. John, chapter 10, verses 1-10 (cycle A), St. John 10:11-18 (cycle B) or St. John 10: 27-30 (cycle C). The communion antiphon also, as in the usus antiquior, draws upon this imagery: "The Good Shepherd is risen! He who laid down his life for his sheep, who died for his flock, he is risen, alleluia."

The image of Christ the Lamb, of course, but also of the sheep is something one sees in many of the apse mosaics of the Roman basilicas (as well other churches elsewhere) and I have always quite enjoyed this particular and ancient symbolism.

Accordingly, today offers an opportunity to both provide a visual meditation upon this theme, while also sharing some of the great artistic glories of Christendom.

Holy Mass on the First Sunday of the Passion - April 7th

Holy Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart R.C. Church,  Morriston,  Swansea at 4 p.m. on Sunday April 7th.

The sacrament of confession will be available before and during the first part of Holy Mass

There will be refreshments available in the Sacred Heart Centre after Holy Mass.

Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I AM.

Until 1959, the fifth Sunday of Lent was officially known in the Roman Catholic Church as Passion Sunday.  It marked the beginning of a two-week-long period known as Passiontide, which is still observed by traditional Catholics.
In 1960, Pope John XXIII's Code of Rubrics changed the name for that Sunday to "First Sunday of the Passion" bringing the name into harmony with the name that Pope Pius XII gave, five years earlier, to the sixth Sunday of Lent, "Second Sunday of the Passion or Palm Sunday".

Sunday 3rd February Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany

Holy Mass will be offered for the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany at Sacred Heart R.C Church, Morriston,  Swansea on Sunday 3rd February at 4 p.m.

What manner of man is this, for the winds and the sea obey Him?

Confessions will be available before Holy Mass and there will be tea and coffee available afterwards in the Sacred Heart Centre.

Sunday is also the commemoration of St. Blaise,  Bishop and Martyr.  The traditional blessing of throats will take place after Holy Mass on Sunday.

For a discussion of the Gospel reading for this traditional Mass and the propers themselves, please click here

    St. Blaise

Died316 AD, Sivas, Turkey
Full nameSaint Blase
AttributesWool comb, candles, tending a choking boy or animals
Feastsfebruary 11 (eastern orthodox and greek catholic), february 3 (roman catholic)

According to the Acts, while Blaise was being taken into custody, a distraught mother, whose only child was choking on a fishbone, threw herself at his feet and implored his intercession. Touched at her grief, he offered up his prayers, and the child was cured. Consequently, Saint Blaise is invoked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the throat.
In many places on the day of his feast the blessing of St. Blaise is given: two burning candles, blessed on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord ("candlemas"), are held in a crossed position by a priest over the heads of the faithful or the people are touched on the throat with them. At the same time the following blessing is given: "May Almighty God at the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, preserve you from infections of the throat and from all other afflictions". Then the priest makes the sign of the cross over the faithful.

Feast of the Epiphany - 6th January 2019 4 p.m. at Sacred Heart

A very happy New Year to all of our followers and we hope you have had a peaceful and blessed Christmas time.

Many thanks to all of you who came to Mass on New Year's Eve.  Special thanks go to Canon Jason and also to Andrew Butcher who came from Cwmbran to serve for us.

Holy Mass for the Feast of the Epiphany will take place on Sunday 6th January at 4pm at Sacred Heart Morriston, Swansea

All are welcome and tea and coffee will be available after the Mass,

"From this day of thy Manifestation, O divine King! begins thy separation from the Synagogue, which refuses thy love; and on this same Day, thou takest, in the person of the Magi, the Gentiles as thy Spouse. Thy union with her will soon be proclaimed from the Cross, when, turning thy face from the ungrateful Jerusalem, thou wilt stretch forth thy hands towards the nations of the Gentiles. O ineffable joy of thy Birth! but O still better joy of thine Epiphany, wherein we, the once disinherited, are permitted to approach to thee, offer thee our gifts, and see thee graciously accept them, O merciful Emmanuel!"
